Bike died and now missing hard! Plz Help!

Ok I got myself a 1980 gs850gl. I had the carbs rebuilt last year and replaced all the intake boots and the boots beween the intake and cleaning plenum. One day on the way home from work it started missing real bad then died, and wouldnt start back up. I got some starting fluid and got it running again but it is still missing real bad. I have put a timing light on all the plug wires and all 4 are firing. Strange thing though is if I pull any one plug it doesnt seem to run any worse... Also it seems to occasionally grab and fire on all four and have some power. Other times it just barley runs.

put a new set of plugs in it.
if that does not fix it you may have a bad ign. module.
    what area are you from?
plus there's varies other reasons this could be happening.
more checks and more info needed.

Check that you have spark and fuel. Flip the petcock to prime position and try to start. If it starts maybe a vacume leak in pet cock vac line. Fuel filter clogged? As has been said check plugs, need more info.

Yup, check for fuel in the floatbowls by removing a couple of the drain screws. Next is check spark. Spark or fuel, figuring out what is the cause is the first step to fixing it.

          Redbeard,

          First: Welcome to GSR.

Second: Where, in general, are you located.

Please describe further what you ment by "timeing light".
If you mean the little neon light thing that hold up to the wire, I think that just flashes if there is voltage there, but that doesnt mean there was a spark (current) and that the spark was jumping acrost the plug gap.

I suspect ignition problems, more than fuel related problems, due to the intemittent nature you described. BUt really should say that anything and everthing is suspect at this point.

With ignition problems; one thing that is often overlooked is the spark plug caps. They are removable, they do deteriate over time and useage, and are somewhat inexpensive, maybe $5 a piece.
