    Replacement stator recomendations please...

    I've been having charging issues with my '85 550L for a while now. It's not been in my "stable" for a couple of years, but now I'm tasked to trouble-shoot why it's always needing a charge.

    I just put a new battery in it, new NGK plug caps, cleaned all electrical connections & wired in the coil relay mod.

    Started going through the stator papers & I can't get ANY voltage reading from the stator... is this a classic sign of a failed stator?? I think it's just running (poorly) on a stand-alone battery charge.

    Sooooo, what is the consensus regarding replacement stators?? Electrosport? New OEM? Used OEM?

    I sense a new stator in my future & want to know what's the best one to buy??

    It's highly unusual to get NO readings. Are you sure you are setting the meter correctly?

    Besides the voltage output readings, what are you getting for resistance on the stator legs?

      If you need a stator I think Ricks has a better reputation than Electrosport/RM Stator. Of course, Ricks is more money. As for what to do, I think you should wind your own. Get a couple of brews, sit back and start winding.

        I had my meter set on the lowest AC selection it had (200 VAC).

        I didn't check resistance, will do that tonight...

            I checked the resistance of the stator & it wasn't good.

            One leg was reading 700 ohmn
            One was around 2.5 ohmn
            One showed infinite (meter read OL)

            Guess I need a new one

            Or more correctly, my ex needs a new one (my bikes are running great!!)

              Try a used Kawasaki KZ stator on Ebay.
              They are the same and all you need to do is wire in the grommet.
              Do a cross reference off Denniskirk.com
              Mines been going strong for a few years.
              1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
              1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

                I installed a ricks stator and R/R in 2007, so far so good (knock wood).

                  Your meter should be set to 'DC' voltage, not AC.

                    The stator output is in AC. After it goes through the R/R it's then rectified to DC.

                    At least that's how I understand it...
