    More Gasket questions

Alright guys, hopefully this will be the end of the gasket/oring questions.

I'm going be replacing the base gasket, head gasket, valve cover gasket, breather gasket, and all associated o-rings on my 81 GS850GL. I'm getting these ordered and wanted to verify that I have all that I need.

In the head pic below I've got items 7(1), 8(1), 13(12) and 16(4) on my list.

In the cylinder pic below I've got items 4(1), 5(4), 6(2)

I also have the valve cover gasket, breather cover gasket, exhaust gaskets, valve seals and the gasket and orings for the cam chain tensioner on the list. I'm ordering as seperate OEM parts since the OEM kits are over a month out.

Once again, thanks a ton for all the help you guys have given me the last couple weeks. Gonna be busy when these parts get in! Hopefully I'll be able to ride again yet this year.

save yourself some money and only order the four copper washers. They go on the outside head studs on either side. the others are made of steel and you can re-use them. I am about to do the same with my 81GS850G for the 4th time this year. I had an aftermarket o-ring (one of the #6s) let go. So I am going all OEM this time. The other times I had problems with the base gasket.

Agree, you only need 4 of the item 13 (copper washer). The other head nuts have number 15 (washer) under them.

While you are ordering parts you may as well get new seals for the tach drive gear. Might save you a headache later.

One other thing is to make sure your cylinder head is flat before you install it again. Find someone with a surface plate or machinest's flat edge - a ruler is not good enough. If the head and/or the cylinder is not flat the engine might leak oil.

      good luck

Already did the tach seals...figured I'd handle an easy project first.

It's usually a good idea to also order new dowel pins -- 2 of #9 on the top diagram, and 2 of #7 on the bottom diagram. Sometimes they get boogered up on the way out.
