    Getting head checked

Any recomendations when having the head off? Should valve springs be changed, ect. I'm looking to go to an 850 setup this winter.

Take it to Pearsons. Have him clean it up, deck it, make sure its good to go. OR Change the valve seals yourself, clean and lap the valves yourself, save the money...valve springs should be checked but are likely good to go unless that thing has some odd wear or a bazillion miles on it.

I'd pull the valves, clean everything up and check the condition of the valves, seats and valve guides. The guides can be checked using the wobble check per the service manual. If everything checks out within the service limit you can get away with a simple lapping job and new valve stem seals.

Again, I would go with Ed says, though I have seen this particular motor running, and there was no reason for ME, based on general "eyes, ears and nose" investigation to think that you have any guide problems. But, if you're in there already, it never hurts to be sure..

Just had the head off my 850. Plan on changing the guide seals, everything else needs to be inspected before making plans. My outer valve springs were a little tired, but still within service limits. Josh says yours runs well, so you're prolly just going to need seals and gaskets. Or are you swapping on a new 850 head from an engine he doesn't know?

Anyhow, it's not too hard to inspect for yourself, and Harbor Freight has the tools you need pretty cheap (micrometer, indicator and base). They'll come in handy on other projects, too.

According to Ed's newer service manual (see his photos above), the tolerances in the 850 service manual hosted on BassCliff's site are incorrect. The other tolerances regarding valves seem correct. Clymer was useless.

Too bad there isn't a "service manual errata" sticky thread.

Just planing on using the 750 head, as I can't find info on there being any differences. I believe my enging to have 11,000 miles on it.
