    choked to death

1979 gs750l. i dont know if this is a good thing or not, but once my bike has been running for a minute if i dont cut the choke of it dies. i was trying to use the choke to maintain different rpm's while checking the charging of the battery, but it would kill the engine. carbs dipped, no air leaks and airbox sealed. thanks, bill

    Hi,

You can also use the lock nut adjustments on the throttle cable to raise the engine speed temporarily. Just be sure to put everything back when you're done.

        Hi,

Were you a good boy and dipped the carbs for at least 24 hours each?

Are you using the stock airbox?

Are saying that you can't get the bike rolling under it's own power?

yes, i was a good boy. i have the stock airbox w/ unifilter, and the bike runs under its own power. i think i need to set my needles to a different pos. will know after plug chops. its just that after the bike is started for a minute it will die if you start to pull out the choke. i didnt know if this is normal or not. my buddy has a 80 yamaha xs650 and his does the same thing only while its running it always floods out. thaanks, bill.

Oh, OK. In your previous post you said:

just pulling the clutch out a little kills the engine.
I'm guessing you meant "choke" instead of "clutch". I suppose this could indicate a rich condition. Does it run well cold but then gets worse as it warms up? This also indicates a rich condition.

My bike won't die if I choke it when warm. I'm guessing this is not a normal condition.

sorry, brainfart. it runs well cold and warm. just uses more gas than when i rebuilt the carbs, using mr. barrs o-ring kit. new boot seals, new air tubes, sealed the airbox, cleaned the electrical connections and had to put a v+h exhaust on...the old one was trashed. airleaks everywhere. ran great then w/ plenty of power until it hit about 90mph on an incline. after the work put in 115 mains and set the needle 2 notches from bottom. after seeing the gas usage i reset the needle to the #3 pos. and made sure my floats were set at 24mm. mileage improved. also in my ignorance i put the uni-filter in the airbox without the little airfilter rack. didnt know it was supposed to go in there. and while reinstalling it noticed i had left the breather tube off of the airbox the second time i did the needle. i now average 25 mpg highwat @ 65-75mph and 28-30 riding like grandma.lol. sorry soooo loooong. thanks, bill.
