    Mechanical Advance for GS1100GLZ

    Hi, I'm slowly getting an '82 1100GLZ back on it's feet and have decided to go to the DynaS3-2 to replace a fried igniter. I obviously need a mechanical advance unit (its electronic advance via the igniter as standard), but my question is which one would do the job, there's one on ebay at the moment from a GS650E, but I have no idea if this would work. Also, does anyone know if I will need the timing plate that sits behind the pickups? Sorry if these are daft questions, but it's hard to get useful info in the UK about the GLZ as it's not a comon beast over here.

    Any of the mechanical advance units will work -- last time I checked, they were all the same from the 550 on up.

    You don't need the old ignition plate -- the Dyna replaces that.

      That's good news, I'll see if I can get the advance from flea-bay as soon as possible. Not sure if I made myself clear enough in the post, it wasn't the ignition plate per-se I was thinking of, I understood that on mechanical advance bikes there was a separate plate behind the main plate that had timing marks on it? Perhaps I was mistaken. Thanks for your help so fast!

        Yes, there is a very thin plate with the timing mark. And yes, you need it if you'd like to time the bike

        There's a (naturally, more expensive) Dyna 2000 product which starts at about $300 - DDK3-2. This has the advance curve built into the logic of the unit just like your igniter, and would not require the mechanical advance. Please bear in mind that the mechanical advance tops out at 2500RPM, so your curve will be quite different after the conversion and performance may suffer.

        Also, when I installed my DS3-2, I had to sand down the rotor some (off the TOP) to get it to fit. The rotor and spacer together were too tall and when bolted together the advance could not move. Some have just found thinner washers to replace the spacer. YMMV.

          Thanks Mike, beginning to wish I'd got the DDK3-2, but it would have blown my very limitied resources .... I was afraid I'd need that thin timing plate ... kind figured timing might be a good idea! .. Looks like it might be a problem trying to find one, but hopefully e-bay might come to the rescue!
