idle hangs high, than bike dies
so heres the deal, just got an 84 GS550E, tank leaked and bike would only run with the choke on. sealed the tank with "kreem treatment" and used the rust removing acid, all good there now. gas runs clean and no leaks. moved on to the petcock, cleaned and tested, operates well. changed gas lines and on to the carbs. the bowls had about a half inch of rust. the carbs are the oval 2x mikuni carbs, two carbs but four bores between the two. cleaned them extensivly two times, changed the orings above the floats, the fuel mixture screws are 3 turns out. the first time i cleaned them the bike ran well, idled well in the garage, but while riding the bike would stall when you came to a stop, you could easily restart and bike would idle fine. tore the carbs down again hoping i missed somthing, found an air leak between the carbs and motor in the boots, repaired and now is all sealed. now it is really hard to "control" the idle. idles really high for a few seconds (around 3000) than falls to 500 stumbles there for a second than dies, somtimes idles well. cant get a consistant idle, by the way it still dies when you stop while riding. any ideas would be wonderful. yes, it starts good and then falls lean, and no i did not "soak" the carbs. you mean in the 24 hr carb soak, correct? no i just used air and carb cleaner.

They made me a believer. 24 hour soak each carb, rinse and blow air. O-Rings can't say enough, made night and day difference. Make sure you get the orings for intake boots as well. Got from cycleorings.com
