    Suzuki gs850 fork bottom threads

Hi i have just taken off my front forks and i have noticed that on two of the studs that clamp the wheel axle to the bottom of the fork legs has stripped.
can these studs be replaced easily or will i have to get another set of fork bottoms?
if they can be replaced where would i get some new studs from? are they high tensile?

    any advice appreciated.
    thanks

These do strip out very commonly.

They are 8mm diameter X 1.25mm pitch studs. I don't recall the length.

You can find replacements at any REAL hardware store (NOT a home store) and you might also be able to find new studs at a REAL auto parts store (the kind with grumpy old countermen, not the chains that employ teenagers).

Replace the nuts and lock washers while you're at it.

      fork studs

      thanks for the info.

do you know if they are high tensile? or just mild steel.

if they are mild steel would i be better replaceing them with high tensile ones?

      cheers

They're "normal" strength -- why do you think they strip out so easily?.

Mine were replaced with hardware store substitutes about 80,000 miles ago, and I'm still alive.

You can also purchase an 8mm x 1.25mm x 55mm bolt and remove the head. It makes a perfect stud. I have a couple that I made that way. I also replaced the regular nuts with nylon insert lock nuts. If you don't have a stud installing tool in your kit, just put a couple of regular nuts on it and jam them together to turn it into the fork. Works like a champ.
