asking for a friend and fellow gs owner
I have a friend who has a gs650L shaft drive. He is wanting to know how to change his gears for more power like we would if we changed our sprockets? Any help you could give me to rely back to him would be greatly appeciated.I didnt do it I swear !!

Its simply not something you can pick up at the parts store. Certainly if one had access to a CNC mill or something of the like you could probably, if you knew enough about ratios and gears and such, make some, but they're just not a change out part. If the guy wants more power, Im afraid his only real option is to sell the bike and buy something larger.

Smaller or larger tire. Each change in tire size results in a 250 rpm engine speed change. That's it.
A 110 is as low as I went on the back. Acceleration was noticeably improved but it wound like crazy on the highway. I went with a 130 tire the last time.1981 GS650G , all the bike you need

Only hope I see is looking for some final drives from some smaller cc bikes and see if they are interchangable. Smaller cc bikes tend to have a lower numarical gear ratio.
Maybe if you feel really gitty you can see what swaps in the trannys and clutch basket gears.

We are talking about back tires not front.Last edited by duaneage; 08-25-2009, 08:47 AM.1981 GS650G , all the bike you need

Ive got a 650 and Im kinda big guy. Im 6-4 at about 260lbs. Mine will slide me deep in the seat if I twist a little too hard on the throttle. Some carb, ignition and tuning would be more in order.

If the bikes a GL, you might want to look for a regular G wheel which is larger diameter. That plus running a 130 tire would be the pratical max I think.Ed

To change engine speed in relation to road speed, you need to change the rear tire.

I would find out the installed size of various tires if you want to be sure. I found that the tire increases in diameter 3/4" for every tire size. A 110 looks noticeable smaller than a 130 ON THE BACK and it's a great deal wider BETWEEN THE REAR SWINGARM.1981 GS650G , all the bike you need

Not to hijack, but did I read somewhere that the final drive off an 1100GK is geared higher than but will bolt on an 1100Gl? Would it be a no-brainer swap without modification?1983 GS 1100 Guided Laser
