    Rust issues

I am new to this and been reading some of the VERY informative on these bikes. I am new to the bike world and picked a project bike as my first motorcycle. It is a worn out 81 GS850G. Pieced together just enough to start.

I dont plan on restoring it, I bought it because it was CHEAP and to give me something to do this winter.

However before I start this thing. I am going to make sure the motor runs great. I have read the carb clean and rebuild section, EXCELLENT info there. Have all the parts for that ordered.

MY concern is the tank. It is not the original tank. I think it come off a 550 (which doesnt fit). I said it was a worn out and pieced together....haha.

I can live with that but the fuel gauge float assembly is rusted all to crap. I pulled the tank, removed everything to make sure the rust was out. and I found where the rust came from. Is this a toss the part and get a new one or is there a was to salvage it? I was thinking I may be able to sand it down and find a way to coat it so it doesn't rust again.

wow that was a lot of rambling sorry for that.
Anyone found an aftermarket tank that will be a close fit to this?

I suggest you hack the rusted sending unit off the base plate and chuck it in the trash. Install the base plate back into the tank to seal the hole and go ride.

If you want a proper fix, get the proper tank and sending unit. There is a guy selling an 850 tank in the For Sale forum... http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...d.php?t=147717
