    still stalls, bad head gasket?

anyone who has been helping me thanks, but is NOT in the fuel delivery system. bike stalls when you pull in the clutch while riding or coming to a stop. idle will not stay consistant. adjust it to 1200 rpms. hit the throttle and stays at about 2500-3000RPMS, then falls and stalls. have cleaned the carbs 4 TIMES, the last time i soaked 24HRS in berrymans chem dip, replaced the orings in the intake boots, cleaned pet cock, works well. checked float height, covered everthing in the fuel system. time to look elsewhere. i dont have a compression tester. im thinking a bad head gasket, hole in piston, somthing. i dont know. fyi this bike is an 84 GS550E (the one with the siamesed carbs). definatly no air leaks or blockages in the carbs or in the boots. please help! thanks for any responces

Did you check compression and/or do a leak down test?

I got one of these but have not used it yet. Hard to beat the price. Maybe someone will chime in with an opinion of the accuracy/quality of this gauge. Obviously it's low-end but might at least discover sizable differences between cylinders.

How many turns out are the idle mixture screws? I'm not familar with those carbs but I've seen a hanging idle created by lean mixture screw settings.

Well it's not a holed piston...that you would know for sure!

I'm sure it's been mentioned or you've already done it but just for the sake of 'getting to the bottom of this' I have to ask: have you adjusted the valves? It won't be the single cure for you but there may be a few things going on when compounded, create the problem that you are having.

I would also suggest a compression test as it will verify whether or not it is a mechanical condition.

How does the bike run at WOT?
How about in the 3500RPM range while under heavy load (5th gear lug)
How does it start? Full choke and at what RPM?
Any signs of smoking: blue, black, white?

well the screws are out 3 turns(fuel mixture screws), no i have not adjusted valves or done a compression test. start it cold with full choke and it idles around 3000- 4500, have to turn it down to half choke quickly. goes through the gears well. no rpm stumbles at any range. the carbs are mikuni "siamesed" carbs. i guess i have to come up with a compression tester.
