My carbs need rebuilt but it will at least start and run with the box, wont even fire without it. Same with cheap pods.

      Food for thought..

Without carb work the bike will not run without the factory airbox.

            Its as simple as that!!

              Hi,

Mr. Steve has told us of a trick he uses when he absolutely has to work without the airbox.

Take a regular shop rag and fold it in half. Lay it across all of the carb intakes and secure it with a big zip tie around the whole gang. This should provide enough air intake resistance to get the engine to run somewhat.

But yes, these bikes need the airbox if you have stock jetting.

              Thank you for your indulgence,

              BassCliff

listen to these guys they know what there talking about
ok now your about the 100th guy ive heard say that they have probs with the air box [ie removing and replace ]lol its easy. really it is. you just gotta be smarter then what your working with ,
step 1 remove bolts from air box [the ones that hold it to frame ]allways over looked gotta be done
step 2 remove clamps carbs both sides
step 3 slide airbox back off carbs
step 4 pull carbs from intake boots by pulling up and back so you clear boots on air box
step5 pull carb rack from left side of bike [clutch cable side ]80 and older non tscc motors
then just reverse steps to replace , i was one of those ppl who thought it was a pain till i had to do it about a hundred times to jet my 77 gs750 e
but i learned just got done with a 80 gs 550 and found the way to do them to but its differant then the 750 and that for another post
                good luck lol Rodman

thanks i appreciate all your help and answers. will let you know the outcome. i got the thing running but needs starting fluid to start. the idle doesnt work, but thats alright. I think I have it figured out. Really excited about having this running shortly. wanna ride it really bad. havent ridden in two years got in a horrible accident, was t-boned by a car that was going 98mph. i was going about 5mph. so this is a really important and exciting time for me.

The carbs are jetted for the airbox and the engine won't run right without it unless you rejet. Easy fix.

How do you rejet the carbs then? Is there a kit or is it a backyard project?

If you want the bike to run correctly you should learn about it first.

Did you even click the link Basscliff gave ya?

If you're just tryin to get the bike to IDLE so you can do something such as check the charging system or the like, and have no intentions of trying to load the motor, these bikes will generally start and idle with a shop towel doubled over and zip tied to the mouth of the carbs. Again.. do NOT run this down the road..

If the bike starts with "start you b@rstard" then the problem is likely a vacuum problem. If you still have the airbox off , take your plug leads off and crank the bike over and hold your hand over each carb intake. Each carb should suck your hand. This will eliminate your intake O'rings. If all good , your problem will most likely be between your carbs and airbox. When I put my 'S back together I had the same problem because I'm a tosser and didn't fit the carbs to the manifold rubbers properly . They looked seated but on closer inspection , they weren't.Also only use that starter cr@p to diagnose your fault and don't be tempted to run the bike for long with it or damage will occur.Hang in there and you'll beat it and then the fun begins.Cheers,Simon.
