what aftermarket coils for GS1000-8V with points ignition

I got a GS1000(8v) still with pinots in the ignition system and stock coils.
I want to replace the stock coils.
anyone know what type of Dyna coils should I use ( what Ohm?)?
or MSD Motorcycle Coil 1.2ohm (PN 8204) ok?

Use the Dynatek GREEN 3.0 ohm coils & wires. I can get them for you if needed. I am a Dynatek dealer. Ray.

The points system uses a 5ohm coil. Using a 3ohm will burn through the points quicker although it will work fine for some time before it wrecks the points I reckon.....

Dyna do a 5ohm (I think it's dark blue). If you fit a Dyna S you should use the 3ohm but the 5ohm will work.

Accel also make good coils that work. They are normally yellow.

You can also fit a resistor in-line with the 3ohm coils if you want to get some with a view to going for the Dyna S later on, that way you can simply remove the resistor.

      Cheers,

      Dan

Unless you have pinpointed a problem with the coils, you'd be better off getting a Dyna ignition and doing the coil relay mod

Points are just an archaic technology designed to deteriorate.

Or you can spend five minutes once every few years adjusting them and never have a problem.

There is nothing wrong with the coils, its the pinots that are faulty. The pinots I tell you!! What the hell is a pinot

Do those bolt onto the stock locations? I see mentions on the forum about using the Dynatek miniature ones instead? I'm also researching ignition stuff currently, on my huge list of things to upgrade...

Mine did... I had to mess about with the spacers.

A lot of us have fairly big mileages on points..... If I go touring with them again I'll carry a dyna S spare I have with me prob.

Well, color me confused. Ray, a dealer is recommending the 3 ohm coils. Salty_Monk is recommending the 5 ohm. Which is correct for a 1979 GS1000 with points?

The stock coils are about 4.5 ohms for bikes with points so the 5 ohm coils are best. As stated by Salty though, you can get the green 3 ohm coils and run a ballast resistor in line to increase resistance. If you do this you can install a Dyna S system later and still run the 3 ohm coils after removing the ballast.

The reason why I need to replace the coils is because the last owner cut the stock spark plug wire and poorly connect some cheap spark plug wires.

If the GS1000-8v stock coils is about 5ohm, can I use the stock coil set from GS1100-16V as I have a good spare set with good condition spark plug wire?

I think I will later on repalce the whole thing with Dyna system after getting the license for it.

Yes but best to run a ballast resistor to protect your points.
