Need help with my GS 500 E.
I have a GS 500e 1992, and I took it apart for a rebuild because of consumption of oil. When i had the head apart doing the valve job i cleaned up the nasties in the ports, and opened the throats and blinded them. I also left the intake manifolds on and matched those to the ports. went with a .5 mill over pistons, and put it all together. Fired it up and ran like a soup sandwich and very lean. Put a bigger main jet in still lean. went up 4 jet sizes and still lean. Checked intake manifolds and they were leaking, fixed that and still lean. Checked my timing and that was off. Fixed that and the bike runs great low to mid range in rpm but once it hits about 9 grand it misses and falls flat on its face. Checked the plug and still lean. Any thoughts? And is there any thing I can do to these carbs for some more fuel without the main?
Thanks guys.Tags: None

Sounds like you need to do a more extensive rejetting, particularly if you have modified the exhaust and intake systems.Ed

Yea but.
It ran fine Befor i took it apart, and i did nothing to the exhaust or intake other than the port clean up.

Porting counts as "extensive intake work" in my book.
You might check with the gang over at http://gstwins.com for more specific info.
It also occurs to me that a jet kit might be the best approach. The adjustable needles in the jet kit have a different taper. You can't just enlarge the main jets.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

You do have the airbox on and sealed correct? It seems there has to be something unhooked or open to be that lean after increasing the mains 4 sizes.

Not really a port job. just opened the throats up a bit and blinded them. and on the exhaust i took some of the 90 degreeness out of it to make more of a radius port. O and matched the rubber on the manifolds to the ports. i have now gone up 6 jet sizes and it runs so so hard until 9500rpm then sputters and noses off on power. with the plugs white as it gets. thats where i find it hard to be the needle. It has the stock air box on it with a K&N and the pipe is stock except the muffler. it had this stuff on it befor and ran great till i put it back together. i love how hard it runs down low, but i cant have a lean condiction. any other thoughts.
