oil overflow and carb issue 1982 GS1100L

Why does gear oil come out the secondary gear vent? And Bike runs but hesitant bigtime. If I Blow air into the atmospheric vent hose..either one...It seems like its fine if i block it. but after a couple revs, she wants to **** and the carbs have been cleaned and rebuilt twice....im sure floats are set right...I just bought some cone air filters and will be putting them on... any suggestions....Thanx...Brian

Is the gear oil level overfilled? When you mention rebuilt on the carbs did you re-use the OEM jets or aftermarket jets? Most here have not had much sucess with the rebuild kits due to the quality of them. If you are putting cone filters (pods) you will have to re-jet the carbs again. It is not impossible to re-jet for pods but most here use the Dyna kits which are quailty kits but still need some adjustments after installing them. Cliff will be along with your official greeting that has tons of information on these bikes. I would suggest getting the carbs operating correctly first and then doing the pods.

As far as the oil spewing out the vent it usually means that that the secondary has been over filled. As to the carb issue it could be several things. Since you stated that the carbs ARE CLEAN that everything is set correctly, I'de check the petcock for propper flow. Next would be the intake rubbers and o-rings on the head (if equipped). Also by adding the cone filters, you'll just make things worse as it sounds like you're running lean. Seal the air box, make sure that the filter is in and lightly oiled and check your air screws. They should be anywhere from 1 1/2 out to 2 1/2 out from lightly seated. Also if you did not replace the o-rings on the carbs prior th reassembly, I suggest you do that as well.
