Shocks for '86 GS450L
Been looking up brands like Ikon, Progressive, etc cannot find anything specific to the GS450L. Can the original chrome shocks be rebuilt? -

Your rear shocks are "eye-to-eye", so measure the distance between the CENTERS of the mounting bolts with the shocks fully extended, then order Progressive, Hagon, or Ikon shocks to match.
The stock shocks are best deposited into the nearest trash can ASAP. They cannot be rebuilt and they're crap anyway.
Lots of old bikes aren't listed in the aftermarket catalogs, but that doesn't mean the parts aren't available.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

2015 Yamaha FJ-09, Magma Red Power Corrupts...

Thanks! Is this measured with shocks mounted and supporting the bike?
Also, are the stock springs OK after 15000 miles, or is it best to buy as a unit? Will automotive spring compressor work?

The springs are useless garbage just like the rest of the original shocks. When you buy new shocks, you need to buy new springs as well. Depending on who you order from, they might assemble the shocks for you.
You might want to call Dave, the US importer of Hagon shocks -- he'll help choose the correct shock body and springs and send them to you assembled and ready to go:
Z1 also sells Ikon shocks and springs -- I'm not sure if they'll assemble them for you, but email or call Jeff and ask:
