She Rattles at low idle
Just bought a 1150 at low idle it rattles bad(has full fairing like a 1984 EF1150 has) BUT as soon as i give a hair of gas rattle stops,. I took for a ride smooth and nice. Im thinking clutch hub worn (68000 kms on it) and idle a little bit low? Any ideas? Whats a bad crank sound like?? thanx mikeTags: None

I'd check the clutch hub and then go from there.Ed

I had that on my '78. I thought most of it was the cam chain. I've been running Sea Foam in the oil. It seems to have quieted things down a lot. It must have softened some hard sludge around the chain tensor, because it sounds normal now. At close to stall RPM, you are going to get a clattering sound. Any low RPM above that should not make any rattling noise.Last edited by OldVet66; 09-10-2009, 07:12 PM.http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...ine=1440711157'78 GS1000E, Dyna-S ignition, Dyna Green Coils, K&N pods, Delkevic SS 4-1 exhaust, Dynojet Stage 3 jet kit, Russell SS Brake Lines, Progressive suspension, Compu-Fire series Regulator 55402 and Advmonster cree LED headlight conversion.

I bet its the starter clutch. Noisy at idle goes away when the revs are up a bit. I've been battling starter clutch issues the whole time I've owned a modified 1150 motor. My wife has a stock 1150 engine with pods, pipe and suspension as the only upgrades. That starter clutch has never had any issues.
I've been bump starting for 8 months now, getting gas where there's a hill and such. However, the street I live on is flat. I'm enjoying the quiet idle until I can afford a new assembly and modify my coil firing.
I would lean the bike over to the right on something sturdy and pull the left cover and have a look inside the rotor to see if the three bolts are loose.GS\'s since 1982: 55OMZ, 550ES, 750ET, (2) 1100ET\'s, 1100S, 1150ES. Current ride is an 83 Katana. Wifes bike is an 84 GS 1150ES

gday guys, the dreaded clutch rattle strikes again, starter clutches normally clack when you try to turn the bike over, especially when cold starting, regards

Is it a constant rattle or does it tend to come and go until you raise the revs?
An intermittent extra noise like that could be the cam walking in the journals.
Not an easy fix, but it also seems to be unnecessary. We just accept the noise at idle and it goes away when riding.
