What the difference between the "E" & "S" models??

I am now the proud owner of an "81 GS1100E (round headlight), manufacture date of 10/80. That's what the sticker on the frame states.

As I browse through all the '81 1100E pics in the gallery, I see some with round headlights, some with square..., some with cowls & fairings, some without..., and some designated as "S" models.

Please enlighten me as to the differences between these models.

    trhanks,

    mike

I thought that all 1980 and 1981 GS1100E came from the factory with the beautiful rectangular headlight. . so I may learn something here too.

Yeah I'm definitely lost on the round headlight. Unless the PO did some modding. The other possibility is that it's an '80 1000. Quick way to figure that out is by the cam caps. Rectangular, it's an 1100. Round, 1000. I dunno.

how does it go? Oh yea " this thread is worthless without picture"

80-81 GS1100E were all square as far as I know.

Yeah, I know - pics coming soon, I'm out of state at the moment. I just picked the bike up last Thurs night & stuck her in my shed... don't know anything about the bike except what the paperwork/frame info states. No title but here in CT it's not needed if the bike was made before 1981.

The PO owned it about 1 yr & never got it running. He didn't seem too interested in the bike, as he had several other "toys" to keep him occupied...

The cam covers are rectangular so I know it's a 16V engine. This deal didn't "smell" right from the beginning, but for $150 I figured I could at least get that back in parts if it all went South.

Anyway, it has this "Pro Sport" 4-1 exhaust on it and I was hoping someone here was familiar with them? Just want to know if it's junk or worth saving.

I'll post a couple of pics of the BIG BAD RED (and I mean RED) BIKE Sun evening...

Not only is that a round light, it looks like a 6" round light, complete with chrome bucket from an L model.

Can you post a pic of the dash, does it have a drawing of a bike all the little indicators? headlight, brakelight, batt., etc.???

Yup, I thought at first the entire front fork assy was from an "L" model 'cause of the leading front axle... but then i saw that ALL the 1100's had the same leading axle.

Well, all looks correct except the light. Probably like the black one in the gallery, has had the headlight shell replaced with the round light. Looks like a great deal, congrats.

gday guys, that dash is from an ex model, as it has the kickstand indicator, the et, model had a rear brake indicator, also if you look on the compliance plate on the frame, it should read gs110x, with the year stamp 81, regards.
