    1981 GS 650 G Stator

    Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone out there could conclusively tell me if a 1981 GS650 G has a 12 pole stator, or an 18 pole stator in it?

I have searched and searched, and no where I could find it listed on the forum. I don't want to crack open the cover until I have a new stator wound for the bike, which I will be installing when I put in a new R/R.

Yet, I need to know so I can get the right type of stator to rewind.
I know I can buy one for around $100, but I want to wind a new one myself and keep the more experienced one as a spare.

Does anyone know for certain what is stock? 12? 18?
    Thanks,

Or call the parts department at a dealer ship. I've done that along with calling Rick's and RM stator.

The picture in the Clymer manual isn't too clear, but it looks as though it's 18 poles in the alternator. Sorry, we use different words this side of the pond.

          Thanks everyone

Great, I was pretty sure it was an 18 pole.

Rudy just slipped a bag of 18 pole stators my way, so after I rewind one for my bike I will put the rest of them up here for dibbs.

There were two sizes of stators in the bag, one smaller diameter, yet much deeper one, and a few thinner, larger diameter ones. I will pull the old one from my bike soon and match them up.

Rudy said there were some good, some bad in the grab bag, so we'll see what I can do about that.

I will also post a thread on the winding results as well.

I think the only bike with a 12 pole stator was the first generation 750 and the first year 850. I parted a '78 550 and it is 18 pole, as were all the 1000's. Not sure about the 400, but for the most part all the GS stators were 18.

Be careful. The 1000E has an 18 pole stator, but it is much larger than the smaller 18 pole stators found on many other models.
