Removing Cam Chain Tensioner. 80 GS850G.

QUESTION: Do I need to remove carbs to remove the cam chain tensioner? Absolutly have to? Or would it just make it easlier?

SITUATION: Have oil leak thru tensioner (oil dripping off end, not base gasket). Have finally gotten the correct oil seals with help from other GSResoursers, Thanks guys, after almost no help from incorrect microfische (you can search on my name for more about that).

Will also need to figure out how to remove and replace the seals.

I have Suzuki & Clymers manauls with directions for resetting the tensioner, not that I completly understand it all, but I can follow the directions. Will be doing that Saturday. Then that will be last of the oil leaks!

It may be possible, but it would be a big pain. Take the carbs off and give yourself some room to work.

If you get yourself a 1/4 inch drive 10mm swivel socket (available at SEARS), you will not need to remove the carbs. makes it about a 10 minute job. The books explain adjustment kinda hard, but once you pull it off and look at it it will become very simple to understand...

I elected to remove the carbs to "give myself some room" since I was not all that familiar with the tensioner.
The 3 mounting bolts are 8mm (and one is shorter thatn other two) not 10mm. The lock nut is 12mm.
I have posted another quetion relative to reassembling the tensioner.

        Thanks for the help guys.
