Must I drain oil before removing crank cover (right engine)

I'm assuming that I don't since I don't see anything in my Clymer's or whatnot that indicates this. I figure since it tells me to take the tank off before valve adjustment, that it would tell me if I should drain oil.

But I just want to make sure. It would be messy I'm reading it wrong!

    Thanks,
    Phil

the stator cover on the left will have some oil in it, but the points cover on the right (as you are sitting on the bike) does not have any oil or anything in it.

And for future reference (this has absolutely nothing to do with adjusting the valves), if your 550 is on its side stand you can remove the clutch cover without losing any oil either. If you have oil behind your ignition cover then it's time for a new crank seal...
