    2 springs in each fork leg?

    A coworker and I were talking about how to stiffen up the forks on my 81 850g. They won't hold any air anymore and I cannot afford a lot at this moment. A few ideas came up. One being replacing the fork legs with a pair that does not take air. Another being longer springs from a different bike. And the last being coiling 2 sets of stock springs together in each leg. I have a set of fork legs that don't take air in them. And I also have a second set of stock springs. Would 2 in each leg even be doable? Would I get coil bind or something similar? Any ideas?

    longer springs are actually softer than a shorter spring assuming = same wire diameter same coil spacing.

    put a 2 inch solid spacer in there and stuff the cap on. might need 2 guys to get it on

      I say take out the springs and cut off about 4" of coils and then make a PVC spacer to make up for the lost spring length. Cut off the coils that are tightly wound together. You can make the spacer stick out the top of the fork an inch or so if you want but it's making the springs shorter which will make the front end stiffer.

        Ok. Any idea what diameter tubing I would need to use?

          Measure the inside diameter of your fork tubes. Go to Lowe's or Home Depot, look at the Schedule 80 PVC piping, get some that is just a bit smaller than the fork tubes. Also get two fender washers that have an outer diameter just smaller than the fork tubes, then place them between your springs and the PVC tubing.

            It's the 3/4" bore PVC water pipe. I think it's called Schedule pipe or something... very common.

              yeah thats what i used. and some fender washers. removed about 4 inches of spring and the metal spacer on top and cut a piece of pvc about a half inch longer than the total length. gonna take it out on the road soon and see how it rides. it was way too soft for me before i did this. now ill just cut the pvc shorter a bit at a time until i get it where i want it. im pretty sure im going to have to cut about half an inch off at least because of how much preload i have in there
