PO Stripped a Cam Cover Bolt and did a crappy insert job...

    Hey all.

As it says in my sig, I've got a 1980 GS550L. I recently did a full carb clean (dip), o ring replacement, valve clearance check (w/ 1 shim replacement), and cable lube. Today was the day I was hoping to put everything together (FINALLY) when lo and behold, I find another crappy insert job on the cam cover.

(By crappy insert job, I mean that I have no idea what this guy was actually trying to do. He didn't drill and tap for a helicoil. He just apparently used some sort of insert that supposedly self-tapped. Supposedly, because it didn't work well,...at all.)

(Previously, we found the same kind of insert on one of the cylinder intake boot bolts, on which I used a helicoil.)

My question is twofold: Would using a helicoil on these bolts even be a good idea? I mean, I'm going to have to check the valves again at some point soon, right? So I'm going to have to take this cover off. As I understand it, a helicoil is less than ideal under these situations, though the low torque on these bolts may make the question moot. So, Helicoil or Timesert? (If I use a Helicoil for now, just to get back up and running, will that ruin my ability to use a timesert later?)

And secondly, what size are these stinking bolts? I have an M6 helicoil kit, which I'll use if it's the right size and helicoils will work ok.

Thanx, guys. This bike has been apart for well over a month, and I just want to ride again.

It's an M6 and use either a Timesert or a helicoil - some have favorites but both will do the job here. Either that or use one of the alloy welding (=soldering) rods (durafix or similar) and just pop in the thread using the bolt.

    Have a look at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=843jj...eature=related

There's loads of other vids of the same thing - It really does work.

Dude, that is the best news I've heard all day.

I already have an M6 helicoil kit, as I had to do a thread repair on one of the cylinder intake boot bolts. I'm going to use that, as the torque on these bolts is so low.

One more question, how do you find the sizes of these bolts? I was looking through both the factory manual AND the Clymer, and couldn't find it anywhere.

Thank you again for the good news, and God Bless.

The part no for that bolt is either 01517-06408 or 01517-06458 (depends which bolt it is - you should have 2 different lengths). Suzuki give a clue with the part number - 06 = M6 and 40 or 45 is the length of the thread.

I just bought a helicoil kit because I have a few stripped bolts showing up .

These are the sizes that seem to be prevalent on my ED.

          5x0.8mm
          6x1.0mm
          8x1.25mm
          10x1.25mm

I found kits on ebay complete with tap and drill inserts that cover all of these for about $100. I'm going out into the garage to do a couple right now.

It's the longer of the two, HampshireHog.

I got my carbs back in, so I'm going to hit up that helicoil process now. Thank you again for the help.

              Use Anti-seize on the bolts.

It cooled off dramatically in WLA with heavy fog/mist today. That might be the cool you guys are hoping for moving inland.
