    GS650GLZ Transmission gears?

I bought an '82 GS650GLZ with~26K miles a couple of months ago. It is in good running condition, but I am not sure how many gears it is supposed to have. Some references say 5, others say 6. Clymer's seems to indicate 5 for both chain and shaft drives. My bike lets me shift from 1 through 5, but I just noticed that the gear indicator actually has a #6 visible in bright sunlight.

So do I have a true 5 speed bike, or do I have a 6 speed bike with only the bottom five gears working?

Look at the cover where the gear shift lever comes out of there is a picture of the shift pattern which shows the gears, good luck

You have a 5 gear bike, one down and four up.

The indicator has six spaces because it's the same housing as what is used in the 550, which does have 6 gears.
