    1978 GS1000 with 40,000 miles

    Hi Guys,
    I recently picked up a 78 GS1000 with 40,000 miles.I love riding the bike and it runs good.I have replaced the chain,sprockets,changes oil,oil & air filter and spark plugs.The plugs were black.Are there common parts that might need to be changed in the future with an engine with the mileage on my bike?

    Have you received your Basscliff super greeting yet? If not please look up Basscliff and follow his list of suggested maintenance items and bring your bike up to date. Just off the top of my head I’d suggest performing a valve adjustment, flushing the brake system, replacing the rubber brake lines if your bike still has them, checking the regulator ground and extending it over the battery, and inspecting/replacing the points.

      I just finished reviving a bike with 113K

      Everything you ever wanted to know to make these things run like a sewing machine.

      Things to do, in this order:
      1) Adjust valve clearances. The importance of this cannot be stressed enough. Do it before you put another 10 miles on the bike.

      2) Inspect and clean carbs. This will solve 99% of power/response and plug fouling issues. Replace intake o-rings while you're in there too. Get everything for this step from http://www.cycleorings.com/

      3) If you have electronic ignition, do the coil relay mod. It's in the first link there. Also running the r/r ground to battery, as mentioned, will ward off some of your impending electrical gremlins. (or solve old ones)

        40,000 miles on a GS1000 is not a lot. There's 111,000 on mine.

          40K isn't a lot for your model. However, some parts can deteriorate just from time, such as valve guide seals. The cam chain tensioner can start to stick and the light outer spring can loose its tension. Electrical connections deteriorate just sitting. So can the plug leads. The stator wiring connections commonly burn up. Not knowing the servicing the bike has had, you may need to adjust the valve clearances, replace manifold boot o-rings, etc.
          What stands out in your post is you said the plugs were black. You may have a rich condition and/or weak spark. A truly good running bike doesn't have black plugs. Get that problem fixed first and you'll see how much better the bike runs. Black plugs also suggest you're loading up with carbon, getting lower mpg, etc.
          And on the seventh day,after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
          Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!
