    No start or noise at all

    Ok, another problem with my new gs850L . Looks like i bought a project bike, even though ran great at sale. Was checking the R/R yesterday, looks like it is bad, going to replace soon. However, now i cannot get my bike to start. Battery is charged, so shouldnt it start up even if charging sytem faulty? All lights come on, but when push start button, no start up noise at all, no clicking, nothing. Pretty sure all connections are in. Have had it running before with bad R/R. What could cause this? Please be very detailed with solutions, i know very little about bikes right now. (dont know where components are located mostly). Thanks again for all the past and future help.

    Sounds like you've been messing around with the wires, are you sure your r/r is bad? No clicking sounds at all and nothing happening tells me you've managed to disconnect the ground from the starter solenoid (located under the left side cover towards the tank), you'll find 2 wires on the right post, one to the battery the other to the fuse block (+), a wire going to the starter on the left side and a small white wire that connects into the harness that provides ground. If all of these are hooked up and nothing is happening, check your main fuse and ignition fuse in the fuse block. They may be blown.

      Don't laugh. Try it.


      Doing nothing else except this, disconnect the R/R connector, then try starting the bike.

      A bad charging system can affect the bike in the way you describe, but once the R/R is completely disconnected the bike will start and run on battery power alone.

      Been there, done that.....drove home.

          Silly question, but, since you say you are new to the bike, ...

          did you pull the clutch before you hit the starter button.

          Yup, there's an interlock that many of us have disabled that requires the clutch to be pulled to engage the starter.

            You could also check that the yellow wire with the green stripe from your solenoid it connected into your harness. This wire goes to your start button (among other places) and fires the solenoid when the button is pressed. To test your solenoid, touch the end of it to the terminal on the solenoid that is connected to the battery (make sure your bike is in neutral before you try this since its a good way to knock your bike off of the kickstand (yeah I did that).

              Make sure that the starter selenoid is grounded. If not just put a jumper ground from one of the mount screw to the neg on the batt. see if this works. Mike (had same prob on my 750)

                Ok, starter solenoid is good, made a nice pop when bridged and started to try to turn the bike over. Tried to choke it, but just shocked my left hand while right hand holding screwdriver, so a little current probably traveled across my chest... won't be doing that again. Will try disconnecting regulator. silly question, but is the regulator on the side, underneath the solenoid, or underneath the battery? From teh side i see a blue, green, black/white, black/yellow, and some other cables, totalling 5 i think (getting dark, darn evening labs keep me away from my bike!) Unclear which is the regulator, may have tested wrong wires, but tested stator, came out ok, so must be regulator or connection? I thought it was the one under the battery, one black wire is very short, connects to itself or battery box?. Four other cables, some attach to stator wires. Thats the reg righto?

                  The starter circuit consists of the pushbutton switch, clutch safety switch if there is one, the solenoid, the starter and the battery. Nothing else matters at this point.
                  If it won't crank at all the problem is in one of these, or more likely the associated wiring or connectors.
                  Stators, regulators, R/Rs, none of that will effect the starter at all.

                      The clutch safety switch has an adjustment point (under the handle near the hinge, two small screws, similar to the one for the front brake handle). If the contacts in that are dirty, or it's adjusted improperly, you'll get nothing. I've run into that.

                        Are you sure the kill switch is off?
                        And on the seventh day,after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
                        Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

                          Jumping the solenoid does not prove it's good.

                            Hey, thanks a lot man. Took apart my kill switch, that was good, took apart clutch safety switch, it was all messed up. Reassembled, bike started up (well, only once, now battery dead again, drained it down working on it and r/r still bad...) Now just to get a new r/r put in and i am golden again. Thanks for all the help fellas.
