Is the set screw backed out properly and the lock nut set? If so, sounds like you have some burrs on the internal parts. It's pretty easy to take the unit apart and deal with issues like this.Ed

I reset the setscrew, but I had to turn it in too much before it was all the way in, I thought. I backed it out 1/4 turn and retightened the locknut.
Something's not right, but it seems to be applying tension. I agree I'm gonna have to take it off.

Quite often the ramped part of the pushrod develops dents. I've simply sanded these flat with sandpaper, or you can buy a new pushrod for most models.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.
