1979 GS400 L / 1978 GS 750 carb swap

Hey guys,
recently became a GS owner, not very familiar with Suzuki's (YET). I have a 1979 GS400L I am fixing up for my Significant Other that has some carb issues, I was told when I got it that it needs diaphragms. I found a 1978 GS750 parts bike for a bargain. From what I understand the GS400 is the middle of a GS750 motor bored out a bit. Does that mean I can swap the carbs straight out from the donor bike?

My master Cyl is weak too, can I swap them as well? If a lot of parts are interchangeable I wanna get the donor bike.

The 400 has CV carbs and the early 750 has VM's - completely different. The master will work as long as it's the type for a single disc front end, not dual. You have no assurance that the new master is better than the one on the 400 though, so it sounds like a big gamble to me. I'd work on the bike first and confirm what parts are needed before thinking about buying a parts bike.

I have worked on the bike and found it needs work on the master cyl. and carbs. The brake setup on the parts bike can easily be tested. It's not a big gamble as the parts bike is $150.

I am ok with the carbs being completely different. What I was trying to ask was have any GS400 owners out there tried a different carb, i.e the VM's from a GS750?

If you understand jetting there is no reason it couldn't be done. You would need to fab something up to make the carbs fit the intake, as they are smaller diameter. Also the spacing between cylinders may not be the same.

Hey Tkent, thanks for the reply, that is the information I was looking for.
Like I said I don't know much about suzukis (I had a DL650 and was the best allrounder I have ever ridden by a long shot, sadly had to let her go) and I appreciate the knowledgeable people on here sharing their experience with a newbie.

I went a checked out the parts queen and she was no queen, everything I wanted off it was shot to hell or bodged up. Oh well. for the Master cyl I am gonna try the unit off my KZ650 as I have one in better (cosmetic) condition on the way. I figure it's worth a shot before I order a rebuild kit.
