weird thing around 6k rpm..bike kinda dies out???

thx in advance to all that responed and have helped me in the past!

    -bought 1980 850g about 12 months ago

-rebuilt carbs around 9 months ago, and typical "tuneup" done.

-bike ran ok, had a dead spot aroudn 6k on full throttle. decided to "set" idle mixture, screwed it up bad. bike would either cut off or rev to the moon on idle.

    -bike sat until today

-put new plugs and gas in. went to friends house with vast carb knowledge. got the idle mixture problem fixed. biked idles good

-still had the 6k problem, bike would not rev on the stand past 6k. it would "choke" or give a backfire sometimes when you closed the throttle.

-checked the timing and advanced it a tad. seemed to help tons. still the 6k thing, started to get better

    -bought a new battery tonight

-ran bike on new battery seemed ok through the rpms when your not crankn' the throttle all the way open to rev through. seems to bog more at full open throttle

-rode the bike around and no big sign of the 6k stall out on the road. the bike seems to pull through the band all the way through. also tried to rev past 6k when i came back from the test ride. seemed ok

-im not really sure if the 6k rev problem is fixed. seems ok for now. anyone had this same problem? could the coils or the charging system be low?

sorry for the long post, any ideas would be great!

i had a 6K rev problem on my bike, which is now gone (thank God). I replaced the coils with high power coils from Dyna, and i ditched the point ignition for electronic. you dont have points...so that shouldn't be a problem...so it very well could be the coils if you aren't having major carb problems.

I had a simmular problem, only at 2000rpm.
Maybe it's not the same problem, but when I changed the battery it also ran fine.

The problem for me still is the charging system (probably the regulator rectifier). I'm looking for one at the time cause I know my bike will stop soon if I won't, the battery will fry again and the stator will go then too.

So check the charging system too. Rev up to 5000rpm and the voltage over the batery should be around 13.5 and 14.5. (under 13 is no good). If it isn't check the stator pages in the FAQ.

        thanks for the replies!

i've been looking over the stator papers. i'm looking foward to running the test. i did remember the desired voltage to be over 13 volts. yesterday about 5k i was only reading a little over 12... looks like its rec and stator time. i don't know if i would feel better after dropping the money or not. if that doesnt work, i'll look at some coils.
