GS1150 oil cooler on my 801100E

I hear tell that after you bolt the oil cooler and lines from an 1150 on to an older 1100E that you have to also swap out the oil filter cover. Is this true and if so Why? Just thought I'd ask since I have the oil cooler bolted on and havn't ridden it yet.

You need an 1150 filter cover to block off the flow of oil to divert it through the cooler.
Posplayr has some pictures to show the difference between the two covers.
I used a bolt with o-rings, washers, a nut and put it in the left bottom port under the cover.

      Ok.

I asume this does not somehow bypass the oil filter? I woner if I'll have a drop in oil preasure if I don't fix it right away.

Sorry about the small photo. The 1150 cover is shown on the right and has part of that corner blocked off.

I understand that the wrong filter cover will cause your engine to self-destruct. You need the 1150's filter cover if you want to run a oil cooler on the 1100. I'd pull the filter cover and take a picture of it. Upload it here, and we'll be able to tell you what cover you have.

My understanding is that without the 1150 filter cover there won't be much oil flow though the cooler. No risk to the engine but not much oil cooling will take place.

Actually the way it sits now, the cooler won't be doing much, since the oil isn't diverted to flow through it. The engine won't be damaged in any way, IMHO. I would use the 'search' function here to get a lot of info with pics, on this mod, since it has been covered several times. If/when you take the cooler off your bike, be sure to change the filter cover too, back to the stock one, to route the oil normally, and avoid a toasty engine.

              Tony.

EDIT: I see Nessism has already explained it.
