    Waht have they done? Points with an Ignitor?

    I have a 79 GS1000L.. I've checked and it has points..
    However someone has wired in an ignitor from a GS850
    part 131100-1901

    The trigger side isn't wired up.. just the coil side..

    It's bolted down where the regulator used to be and I believe they must have also done a R/R mod.(but that's not important right now)

    I need to trace the wires to see how they did things..

    Anyone seen this before?

    The more I look the more I get confused..

    On the CDI there are 6 wires..

    The two Blue and Green Trigger wires are not hooked up

    Orange/White (+12v) is tied to a While/Blue wire that taps another While/Blue wire going ???

    White is bound to Black/Yellow (what would have been both coil wires) then tied to a Yellow wire that taps into another yellow wire going??

    Black/White goes to ground.



    I am still trying to figure out where these mystery Y and W/Bl wires go..
    I suspect they are tapped into the points somewhere..

    I can't see what if any function this mess can have.

    From what I can tell the Yellow and White/Blue wires are re-used from the old Rectifier harness.. I have to unwrap more electrical tape to figure out where they go.

    This whole thing is a mash of some nice soldered and heat shrink splices. bullet connectors and just plain twisted and wrapped hack jobs.

    Whatever is is the bike will start and run..

      I have a good crank trigger and crank end with bolts and spacers. You'll need this to run the ignitor.
      I can also help with the wiring but I have to go at the moment.

        Good news bad news for me I guess..

        I don't have a R/R mod.. just a plain old stock rectifier..

        Now the weird part..

        I figured out what the CDI ignitor is doing.. It's pretending to be a voltage regulator.. No I'm not kidding..

        The PO had wired a GS850 Ignitor box in where the voltage regulator went..
        those yellow and White/blue wires go the the stator.. As they should if it was a voltage regulator..

        So do you think the Ignitor is ruined?
        I should figure out a way to test it..

        It's been removed and I put in the spare regulator from the GS750

        Good news is they didn't touch the ignition and I have a Dyna S on the way..

          pictures pictures pictures, if they had wired a ignitor box to the stator there should have been alot of smoke and flames.

            OK I'll take pics when I get home..

            The signal side (blue and green wires) of the ignitor was not hooked up.. plug just hanging there.

            On the power and coil side
            the white/blue and yellow stator wires that should go to a voltage regulator were hooked up to the ignitor coil outputs.

            nothing else hooked up..

              My bet is the 3x~70VAC hitting it from the stator has probably cooked the innards. You never know though. The easiest way to test it is to connect it up to some pickups and coils properly and check for spark when cranking. Of course you need the pickups to do this. Why not just hook the points to the coils and be done with it for now, esp if you're switching to a dyna ignition? This would at least get you running.

              I would definitely check the output of your stator since it could be fried as well which would be most unfortunate. How did the PO accomplish this anyway? Did he splice the wires or just completely disregard the color coding? Sounds to me that he was confused or didn't give a sh*t. I hope you get it sorted out one way or another...

                Actually, it might well be fine ... with no signal to the input signal wires it would never try to fire. If there is a rectifier and battery hooked up elsewhere, the wires from the stator would never get over plus or minus 15 volts. If it never fires, this may well not hurt it ... But of course there would be no guarantees
