    82 gs1100e

once more I must consult the wealth of wisdom here. I found an 82 gs1100e. Everything instinct wise says buy buy buy. The price is amazing, $250. thats right 250. its in much better cosmetic condition than my 79 gs850. The current owner says he knows very little about the bike just he was told the crankshaft is bent and the gear selector is no good. it cranks up and runs. I just am curious as to how much of an ordeal it will be replacing the crank?

Might be worth $250 to just part out, even if it's not worth getting road worth again.

      Bent crank and it runs?
How does one know it has a bent crank?

If it is indeed a bent crank ya might as well rebuild the entire engine.

I was kinda curious how it'd keep running with a bent crank, without some sort of terrible, terrible noise. Only crank I've seen bend without breaking blew a piston out the side of a old Dodge 300 straight six. My experience is that cranks usually break, and con-rods bend. I don't have much experience with motorcycle engines though, mostly automotive.

Grab it up, sort it out later.
Unless you need one ready to ride or something.

It could be bent, but even so, sit on it until an engine comes along.

If you decide not to get it let me know and I'll take a trailer ride over there and pick it up.

Piston 1&4 and 2&3 should be equal distances to the top of the spark plug hole.
You can also check it with a plug stop and a degree wheel.

It aint bent ......its twisted....and it will run. Mine did and so did isleoman's. 1100EZs had unwelded cranks......and they twisted. Most likely the bike will need a 83 crank.

Without popping a head off, what's the easiest way to check? Will a twisted crank run a certain way, or is it just more prone to failure?

It will not run good and there is no other choice but to replace the crank.
