Hi mate I bought an exhaust from a gs1100 that fits on to my 850, though it wasn't a stock exhaust.

Mostly, yes, but you might have to do some adapting at the muffler hangers.
Besides the differences between the Gs and the GLs, they also started some different rear footpeg mounts (and the muffler mounts that go with them) in '82.

hi Mike yes i should have said I had to make some brackets to make it fit at the hangers. Mine was a 4-1 system and didn't line up with original brackets. Go to local DIY store and buy some aluminium to make a bracket with.

i've got a nice 80 850gl exhaust i'm looking to get rid of if interested. I wish it would fit my '79 but doesn't.1979 GS850G
