Not to mention all the nickle and diming you do after ya get it one the road.
    +1 on that!

Once you start riding the bike, you realize that it needs new shocks and fork springs. As your trips get longer, a more comfortable seat, a windshield, highway bars, luggage rack, top case, saddlebags, GPS..etc. The list goes on and on.

      bike cost

it doesn't always cost a grand.

I found a 80 750 on craigslist for $100 and got is running AND registered for another $200. (been driving it for a month or two now) It can be done. don't buy what you don't need.

check odd and end placed for parts make sure to look online for stuff. Get the bike running first, and don't worry about brakes and tires till your driving.

also make sure it is either registered as inoperable or your registration is good for a while. you don't want to be hit with another several hundred dollars on back registration later.

      Happy trails.
      --------------------------------------------------
gotta post pics of the ride, it looks great for 30 cuz it sat in a garage for 9 years. his loss my gain.

Sorry, but this REALLY SCARES ME.

How can you seriously consider driving your bike BEFORE making sure it has good tires and brakes?

Yeah, save them until the last, to make sure the engine works and all that, but PLEASE ... don't ride on bad tires and brakes.

I don't really know how to respond to this You're full of sh*t..that's all I can say. Transfer of title, registration, inspection and tags will cost $200 in my state. Anyone who would ride a bike with bad brakes and tires is just plain stupid. Not only are you putting your own life in danger but others around you.

                Different states have different rates.

                In oHIo:
                Title transfer: 11
                Registration: 43.50
Inspection (only necessary if brought in from out of state) FREE
Tags (isn't that what the registration is?)

Total for the above-mentioned items: $54.50.

The only cost above that is for taxes. If you buy from a dealer, you are pretty much stuck paying tax on the full amount.
If you buy from someone in-state and an inspection is not necessary, you can claim it was in "poor" condition and you only paid $100 for it. Tax: $7.
Even if an inspection is necessary, you can say that you have restored it to its present condition. They will never know.

                New total: $61

                .

This, again, shows the difference between the states.

In California, your registration costs include the actual license fee and personal property tax, which means that the cost goes down every year. 30 years ago, I had to pay almost $200 to register my new KZ1300. If you put the bike in the garage for restoration, you have to pay the registration for all the years it was off the road before you can get current tags.

In oHIo, I don't know what the difference is, but I just looked at the renewal paperwork for our bikes. My son's 850 will be $43.50, my Wing will be $49.50. $15 of each of those is for county tax and $3.50 for processing fees. If a bike is in the garage for more than two years, you simply get a new plate, pay for the upcoming year and ride. No need to pay for the time it was off the road.
(If it was off the road for less than two years, you still only have to pay for the upcoming year, but you get to keep the same plate.)

                    In Maryland
                    Title - $50
                    Registration - $10
                    Tax - 6%(minimum 38.40)
                    Tags/Plates - $97.00
MD Inspection - $50-70 (Depends on which mechanic you go to)

                    Minimum is $245.40.

This assumes that you have a clear title and a bike that will pass inspection with no additional repair needed.

If you want historic tags, then no inspection, Tags $51.00

                    Minumum is $ 149.40

Plus your time to spend the day at the MVA.

Im not sure but Im guessing to renue mine next year(birthday) will prolly be around 25 bux.
No inspection but I did have to have one of Ga's finest come to my home(hide the bong) and run a VIN check to make sure the bike wasnt stolen.
                      No title in Ga either.

We got a spark today. There PO had added all these stupid useless connectors and we found the single fuse on the motorcycle (that was burned out). After cutting up some wires and skipping fuses and connectors we had dash lights, sparks in cylinders 1 and 4. We also had current to the starter motor, which turned over slowly/weakly, we suspect it needs to be cleaned.

We couldn't get spark in 2 and 3, so we traced the wires into the ignition coils all the way under the motorcycle to the timing mechanism and found out the mechanism that sends a message to the coil for 2 and 3 wasn't contacting so the sparks were never told to happen. Anyway, we moved the contact in and now hopefully we will have spark (and without having totally ruined the timing).

                        A good day for sure.

                          Steve,

I'm sorry I guess i was not clear enough.

NO DON'T RIDE your bike until stopping and rubber has been addressed. I think when i said driving i meant running, IE as in the engine running.

No need messing with the expense of tires and brakes if your engine needs a rebuild. Steve, You stated it better than i did on the Forum.

                          TO: GS RESOURCE.

I am sorry for not being clear. I would never consider riding or recommend riding without the proper safety (helmet, gloves and jacket) equipment and safe vehicle to do so. With proper rubber, brakes and acceleration addressed.
