    Speedo Gear Box

    Hello everyone,

The other day i was riding around and my speedo stopped working. I was not sure why because i have been riding this bike for probably two months now.

I took apart the gear that connects to the front wheel and found that the washer inside was chewed to pieces. the one with the two tabs sticking up and two tabs in. Nearly filed down to perfection. To keep the bike running (as my now tri weekly driver) i continued to finish the filing and re install the washer. (Posted Pick)

Does anyone know where i can find this washer, i would enjoy having a notion of speed again (for safety) and it bugs me when things don't work right.

Not sure if individual part are available, might be easier to just look for an entire assembly on eBay.

By the way, a new one is about $82 at Alpha Sports or aboout $60 at Carolina Cycle, just for comparison purposes.

Here is a link to the Babbitts search page. Copy this number: 54600-49100, paste it into the search in the right column,
you will see a list of what else it fits for your searching pleasure.
(It fits most of the GS line and the Madura.)

The speedo drive on my 78 GS750 also kicked the bucket all of a sudden a while ago. I was going to buy a refurb/used part but instead ended up buying a new drive altogether. I'd rather have all new parts down there, than a few worn and a few new parts. I packed the inside with some lithium grease and she is as good as gold now. Also make sure you throw some grease down the speedo cable sleeve too. Good luck and let us know how it worked out.

There's probably a fist full of them on eBay. I had the exact same failure on my 850, and the used part I put on there is still working fine. I think I still have one around here somewhere. I gave the replacement a good de/re-grease before installing. The grease in it was pretty stiff. That might be something to inspect while changing tires...
