    charging on 700ES

i have a 1985 700ES that at low speeds such as around town the battery runs down. i put separate headlight switch on and at 4500 or so it shows 14.3 volts but when headlight is on it drops to around 12.7 at 4500. when rpm is down it appears to just be operating off battery voltage. is the problem the rectifier or is stator getting weak. love this bike please help...

No way of knowing without proper troubleshooting, usually it is just poor connections somewhere, at least at first. Soon enough that will destroy more expensive parts.

Search for The Stator Papers on this site, all you need is there.

Cliff will be along soon to help you find it.

The stator papers will help!! I have had the same issue, Replaced the R/R and now the problem is gone.

As suggested, you need to go through the stator papers and the troubleshooting flow chart. It is not difficult and it is a logical approach to finding and fixing the problem. No point in assuming something is at fault, do the tests and verify it.

As also mentioned, many of these issues are as a result of bad/corroded connectors or weak grounds so two things to do. Clean or replace all connectors from the stator to the R/R and the from the R/R to the fuse block. Also locate and clean all grounds. It is also helpful to run an additional lead from the R/R ground ( black/white) directly to the negative pole of the battery. That sorted out charging for me and many others.

Arm yourself with a digital multimeter, circuit tester and the stator papers and go to it.

        You will figure it out.

        Good luck.
