Wow what a ride trying to get to ride.
The quick back story:
My 85 GS700es stopped running 15 years back - many family issues left her neglected. But over the last few months I've been trying to bring her back to life. To date have replaced all the normal parts - ie: Battery, chain, brake pads, new petcock and the tank finally got back from the radiator shop and is now clean of MAJOR rust. Tore down all calipers, cleaned and replaced piston seal & dust boots, Repaired stripped oil cover bolt, put new oil in. Replaced bad fork seals and upgraded to progressive suspension for springs. Lots & lots of cleaning and still have some body work & paint to finish.
And many members here have helped and supplied some needed parts.
Well last night we pulled the valve cover to set valve clearance and found all right at .004 - right on per the manual - Yahoo!
She had gone through 2 R/R and when she died, she would start - run for a very short time and them blow the main fuse. At the time I suspected the R/R. But per the forum recommendations I tried testing the stator. Honestly I was confused and the results did not seem to make sense. So suspecting the R/R I purchased an Electrex replacement and installed that last night too.
Then the moment of truth, we tried to fire her up --- But no spark.
So started going through the tests and coils appear good - as do the ignition pick ups and have voltage at the ignitor. But the jumper test (per the manual) showed no spark at #1 or #2 plug.
So it appears the ignitor has gone bad? - part # 32900 - 31310 which was superceded by 32900 - 49420
I've been running some searches on the subject and reading all morning.
It looked like at one time a member (Saddlewarmer) was attempting to repair some models of the ignitor. Apearently he is no longer on the board and I think another member has some similar information. I can't recall now who that is ( the post's are starting to blur)
If anyone is aware of a repair service please let me know??
On another track, it appears the ignitor used on my bike is interchangeable with some other GS models the 83 GS1100 & GS 850 with different "G_" designations.
Following that road I've contacted one member with a gs 1100 who has replied his part # is 32900 - 45411.
Does anyone know if this part will work??
Additionally some of the replies I've read indicate that the "advance curves" may be different 1100 to 750/700.
I have no training or experience with these issues - would someone know what effect this may have?
Finally if anyone has a direct replacement they could part with - please contact me, my email is jag007@clear.net
Thanks again,
Jack
