Whole in the Airbox
Well, I finally got my basket case bike together, but noticed in the process that there is a whole cut in the airbox. Why would someone cut a whole in a perfectly good airbox? I wonder if this is why my idle tends to run a little high after the bike is good and warm. Even with the idle adjustment turned all the way out.Tags: None

Unfortunately I missed the part where you mentioned what bike it is, but if you are referring to the rectangular hole at the rear of the airbox, that is where the rubber snorkel fits and your bike will not run properly without it.

Adjust your jetting to compensate for the hole and call it a day. I doubled the size of the air intake hole in my GS1000S airbox and just bumped up the jetting. She ran perfectly once I got ti sorted out.

A little more info.
O.k., I finally got around to poking around with my airbox. You know, the one with the hole in it. Well, my 1982 GS1100E has to holes in the airbox. Big enough I can make a fist and stick it in the right side, the left side I can stick my hand in without a fist, you know flat kinda like you are waving. It is pretty obvious someone to a grinder to it and cut a few big square holes in it. The filter is in great shape though.
I did tape job to plug the holes and completely sealed the box as a test and the bike wouldn't hardly stay lit, and I feel sure that it will require a little tuning. I am looking to replace the airbox, and just haven't seen one hit eBay yet. If ya hear of one, or know where I can get one, send me a note.

A new filter box is about $160 and they are tough to find used. I would just jet up for the increased air flow and call it a day. You can get bigger pilots (probably don't need to), shim your jet needles, and get bigger main jets.
Start out with a couple of plug checks and see where you are. Then adjust based on your findings.
But... before you do any of that check for vacuum leaks. And double check that the mechanical settings on your carbs are correct too. Are the carbs synched? Make sure. Those CV carbs can run pretty lean and you'd never know it. However if they aren't synchronized they will run high idle even with the lowest idle setting.Last edited by Guest; 11-16-2009, 03:23 PM.

If I remember right the only (stock) hole in mine is at the bottom of the box with a grommet around it. Maybe 2" in dia.

Didnt know how big
Someone said, seal it up... so i did, duh. And yes, I didn't account for the 2 in hole that I didn't know about. I have since found one on ebay that I hope I can get (if no one jerks it out from under me). And I did see the pretty hole in the bottom that I didn't account for.
I will try to post a picture soon... it is quite interesting.
