I missed that it was an E and see that the fisch shows a different cylinder gasket to the GS1000G, sorry my guess is then invalid.

Heh. Yep, I PM'd him already. I'm going to take off the head again and lift of the cylinders to try and get some more pics up in the next couple of hours.

Not sure what those are for; they sure seem to be seals for the oil passages (high pressure and return) in the cylinder . I have some in a Vesera kit I have as well but have never used them on my ED

That's the retooling for the MLS gasket.

I don't know if this helps, but this is on my 850G:

It looks similar to the one you posted originally.

Could you explain that a little further?

I went back and looked at the head, cylinder block, the top of the cases and the two gaskets and there is no place these things could go. I can see some marks on top of the cases where o-rings might have been at some point in the past but there weren't there at the last rebuild and I guess they won't be there this time either. Hopefully this time it won't leak all over the tire after a few thousand mile though!

Since these "beer can" gaskets clearly can't work with these head and base gaskets I guess I'll go ahead and torque it down today. It'll work or it wont!

MLS = Multi Layer Steel head gaskets. When running high compression engines, or engines on boost (at least for my Trans Am) they are preferred.
I looked in my 82 book and it made no mention of that part you showed. It just said lay down the base gasket, put the o-rings around each cylinder base, and slip the block on.

Thanks koolaid, I meant the part about the retooling though. I can't figure out what these things could be for since the OEM setup doesn't use them and the MLS aftermarket gasket doesn't either.

Fitting that this bike should come back to like on Halloween!

Is it possible that the gasket kit is for multiple models and your oil passages are different? I see that a lot on car gasket kits. For example if you order a standard Ford 302 engine gasket kit you get gaskets for a couple different fuel injection intakes as well as a set of carb style intake gaskets and you just pick the one you need. Maybe the same thing applies here?

Yeah, that could well be it. Maybe they have a standard "parts bag" that fits a few different models and toss them in with the different head and base gaskets. I think I'm going to nail these up on my "wall of infamy"

Cometic admitted that there was a tooling problem with their MLS gaskets around the oil pressure port. They made them backwards so the oil just squirted out the right side of the head.
                          Ask me how I know.

                            OK, this sounds familiar...

So, I just recently installed the provided Cometic gaskets when installing the Wiseco 1166 kit in my 82 GS1100E. Shortly thereafter, noticed that it likes to spritz some oil at me out the right side. This means I get to change the gasket again, doesn't it?
                            Rats.

It is all good practice .

FYI, we only "know" the tooling error exists for Cometic 1166 MLS gaskets.

Possibly larger 16V 1100/1150 sizes have an issue as well but that is speculation. It is very likley if they just changed the bore size between MLS 16V 1100/1150 gaskets.

There is a good chance that the 8V MLS gaskest don't have an issue.

Looks like I better keep a rag handy until I put the 550 back together. Any suggestions for the replacement gasket? Sorry to hijack this thread. I'll stop now.
                                Thanks,
