    gs 1100e trans?

    What's up Gang?

    I'm going to crack open my gs block next weekend so that I can take a look at the trans. I wanted to know if I could get to the trans from the bottom? If anyone has ever repaired a trans before I love some addvice.

    you have to split the cases to remove trans and or forks.
    if the lower case has been modified such as per drag bike only/auto trans ect..
    then the forks could be removed from the bottom.
    im sure this does not apply to you.

      As said above, its split the cases to get them out. Add into your budget on new seals, bearings and what ever else parts that you need. If you are changing gears parts allow £70 a gear and hope that the input and output shafts haven't had gears removed previously as you'll need them also.

      2nd gear needs to be pulled off the shaft with a press and it can only be done by using a clamp around another gear. (Sorry can't remember which one at this time of writing.)
      I replaced all the spacers and bushs in mine when I did it a couple of years ago.

      You will find a small O ring between the cases that needs to be replaced aslo.

      When rebuilding the cases you need a gasket paste from suzuki. Its changed from when these bikes were made so don't be suprised. It also only needs a waifer thin spead of paste to seal the cases. If you have a large think line of paste it will squease out inot the inside and make a horrible mess and you will have to strip it and rebuild the thing again.

      I stripped my engine completely, if your head and barrels are OK you can just turn the engine upside down and strip the lower cases off without removing the head and barrels which will save time, money and effort.

        That's why I just want to get to it from the bottom because the top end is in great shape. And I would like to swap the trans if need be and I would like to see if I broke any of the shifting components before I do anything.

          That is how I understood your question. I have done this on a Kawasaki (my GPz) but not a GS. It's not that difficult, if you can find a surface to balance the top end while working on the bottom end. There will be shift forks that you will want to check out thoroughly, as well as the gearshift cam.

            You don't need to remove the top end to get the lower case off to do the trans.

              Sup, give me a call at 714-356-7845 & I will help you & let you know EXACTLY what you need to do. It is easy & you only need a couple of tools you may not have but if you buy them you will continue to use them. Ray.

                flip it on its lid and blow it apart...
                no special tools to remove the bottom case and have the tranny in your hands.

                  SPECIAL TOOLS as in an "impact driver" to remove & re-install all the phillips head screws behind the clutch hub & a torque wrench to reassemble. You wouldn't believe how many destroyed phillips screw heads I have had to deal with because people didn't even know what an impact driver was, let alone owned one or knew how to use it! Some people don't even know the difference in a #2 & #3 bit & wreck screw heads just because of that! Ray.

                      1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
                      1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.
