Front Wheel Axle
Okay I've started pulling the wheels apart for repair and new bearings, the only problem is that I can't get the axle out. Should it just slide out or are the spacers and speedo surposed to screw out. The manual just has a nice picture but not much info.Tags: None

Just slides out.... Put the nut back on loose & give it a wack.

Put the nut on backwards flush with the end of the axle to protect the threads and give it a good wack.1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

Sorry to ask the obvious. Did you loosen up the bolts on the bottom of the fork too?

You dont need to loosen those 8mm nuts from the bottom of the forks. They only hold the spacers. BUT if its tight take the wheel out that way (remove speedo cable) and take the axle nut off and see if the spacer under it will slide off. A brass hammer striking the axle with the nut sitting flush with the axle (on backwards) should loosen it. If not soak it overnite with the mentioned WD40 and try again next day.

If you have to drive the axle out, don't forget to replace the wheel bearings afterwards.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

The wheel is off the bike.
Srayed with WD40 let it sit for awhile gave it a tap and another, no movement. end of the axle is just a bit squashed.
Still the axle is not coming off.

Yes, this. Whack the bastard with one mighty smite to get it moving. It'll do a lot less damage than pecking at it.
You can clean up the axle threads later with a thread file or 12X1.25 die, or just get another axle easily enough.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

I would support the wheel with the axle perpendicular and apply some penetrating fluid and let it soak overnight then go from there. Use a rubber or plastic mallet.
