83 gs 1100e it says it has 26,542 miles Its smoking out exhaust would it be wise to put rings in it.I know that a few (at least)valve seals have dryed up and cracked pulled a couple valve spring off just to inspectTags: None

While 26000 isn't that many miles, the problems come from when they sit for long periods of time without being run. The seals dry out & the rings sometimes get stuck. If you have it apart, hone the cylinders & re-ring it. Also, install new valve seals & lap the valves. If will be a pretty fresh motor if you do these things & if you were to do a few other things you could get quite a bit more power fairly easily & without a lot of expense. Ditto everyone else - I'd replace those rings if you've pulled the head. It isn't a lot ofe extra effort / cost.
If you're like me, just invest in a magnifying glass so that you see the marks on the rings which tell you which side is up79 GS1000S
