    gs650 high idle problem

I'm chopping a 82 gs 650glz and just finished the carb rebuild but now the bike idles at 12,000. I tried adjusting to the top screw but it didn't work. I'm just a little lost. I think i need to adjust the air screw or air jet(whatever you want to call it) at least that's what the manual says i have to do but the manual sucks and isn't very descriptive.

12,000 rpm idle? Sounds like you got a hunk of weld splatter from the oxygen lance on the throttle linkage.

Did you do a bench sync? and do you mean "1200" for your idle ?

12,000 rpm is a tad beyond redline on these engines...........Does it have an airbox, pods, or what? If it's sucking a lot of air, really lean will cause the idle to go up and up.............

i did mean 12000 but i fixed the problem. and now its at 1500 or so still needs a bit of fine tuning but now the gas won't turn off at the peacock . any suggestions on how to fix this.

The peacock? The gas petcock on most of the GS bikes are vacuum operated, so there is no real "OFF" position. They have "ON", "PRI", and "RES", sometimes only first two. If the fuel flow doesn't stop without vacuum applied, you've either got the petcock in the "PRI" position or you've got a leaky petcock.

sorry meant petcock not peacock (really spaced on that one). so the vacuum pressure stops the gas form constantly running?

Vacuum opens the valve to let the fuel flow by gravity, lack of vacuum shuts it off.

Try taking it apart and cleaning it.
