that part sounded fishy to me...but a motor is a motor especially when it is free. So aside from a bore kit what cams and other options sound reasonable for a healthy street motor.

hey all. I was given another suzy motor. it appears to be a late 78 gs1000. complete bottom end with crank and trans.....the pistons and the jugs. nothing else. appears to be in real good condition....no wobble in the rods or twist in the crank. What are viable options for this? What head can I put on this? I was told they were going to drag race this motor but lost the bike.

Find out what pistons you have and go from there. Check to see if the crank is welded, and see if the clutch basket is strengthened. You can make a GS1000 motor very strong, but it will take head work and good carbs.

Just a thought, Check to see what good parts you have, sell them & find a complete eng. It seems to me, starting with just the cases, crank, & MAYBE good cylinders & pistons, you will have a lot invested before you are finished. how do i know if clutch basket is strengthened? crank is not welded....stock pistons and rods...thinking about putting it together for a spare........found a decent gs1000 in wisconsin

The back side of the clutch basket will show additional welding
If your motor has all the side cases, ignition and a stator, you might just need a head.
The GS 1000 had 2 different heads - small port for VM carbs and big port for CV carbs. Both bolt right on, the difference is in what carbs you can mount up.1978 GS 1000 (since new)
