    EI conversion

Been a long time since I did a point to EI conversion on the old cars and Im sure the GS is a bit different.
Doing some pre-research and getting my ducks in a row for the restore of my newly aquired 78 GS1000 for some post holiday work.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for a simple factory type conversion to do away with the points? Searched till my hearts content and didnt turn up much.
I need to know what parts will work and what parts I might need to do the job. I would imagine anything post 80-81 GS1000 will do right? Coils, R/R and CDI box?

Im sure the info is out there someplace...

My GS1000ET (80) has EI, that model has the mechanical advance.
So you would need that. Not sure if there is a difference between the igniters. Coils are 3 ohms or there abouts. The R/R is the same as every other GS I have had. Your bike may have separate regulator and rectifier. That is no biggie though, 'cause you will probably be getting a Honda one soon anyway....

      You either need:

      1. trigger, CDI, coils (3ohm) from an 80-81 model with the mechanical advance

or a much easier & cheaper solution

      2. Dyna DS3 approx $120. No CDI, should use 3ohn coils but it will work with the 5ohm ok.

I have a bucket of parts from the PO of my 850 that contains what I think are 2 Honda RR's in addition to much other electrical parts, including a CDI box.

Easiest path is to get a Dyna S. They are designed to work with the stock coils so no worry there. It shouldn't be overly hard to convert over to stock OE parts, the harness and where to install the ignitor (not CDI) would be the biggest obsticals. BTW, I have some signal generators it you're interested, and in addition to the things Dan listed, you will need an advance unit with the electrical pickup attached.

          Good luck
