    Cam End Caps

    Hello All,

    I've recently acquired a 1978 GS550E off ebay for $50. It wasn't running at all and was missing a lot of parts off of it (seat, handlebar controls) so I never heard it run. I've taken it out of the frame and I'm wanting to open it up and take a look inside. I took all 16 cover bolts off but I can't get ANY of the screws on the end caps to come loose. Any suggestions or advice. The screws are on the outside, not underneath like some other motors I read about. I've decided to stop trying because I've almost started to strip on head. Thanks.

        Or more specifically the "club it with a hammer type"...



        Kragen has them for about $15 - craftsman one is probably better but the Kragen one works fine for me.

            Very useful to have but no I don't believe it would work in this situation, never tried it with one of those (used it for removing clutch basket nuts, sprocket nuts etc).

              No, you want the one from Sears. I have one like that and it works great. Just make sure you use the right size phillips bit - the large one. Also, make sure you push that sucker in, twist to the left and hold it, then give it a good whack. It might take a couple to get it going but it'll do the trick. Get a good 1-2lb hand sledge too.

              Spray a little PB Blaster on those screws and let it soak about 15-20 minutes before hand. That stuff eats through rust like termites on wood.

              I've also found the impact driver works good by hand too - just turning, not hitting, obviously.

                Because the Japanese Philips head screw is not quite the same as the US spec.

                Useful to have all over the bike..

                If that fails.. drill and Ez-out

                you can get a JIS #3 from McMasterCarr for the engine side cover screws but most of the time you can get away with a good US spec #3 phillips.
