    Fork oil level

I have a `79 Gs 1000E. I want to change the fork oil. the manual says the forks hold aprox. 8 oz of oil. If I put in 8oz of oil will I still need to measure the oil level? Do I need to remove the fork seals and the spring to change the oil?

if you drain them properly and measure correctly the 8oz should be close enough no you don't remove seals or springs

Do I need to remove the fork from the bike? I have never replaced the oil. I heard that I can use Dexron II transmission fluid in the forks. Is this true?

there is a phillips head screw on the bottom of the forks That is the drain screw You only need 16 oz why not get the correct fluid

I want to get the correct fluid. Someone told me that fork oil was nothing more than transmission fluid. I see the drain plugs. Where do I put the new fluid?do I just pour it in the top of the fork tube after I remove the air valve? Do I need to remove the fork springs?
