    What is this?

    What is this tab on the top half of my crank case?Is it from when it was cast?I always wanted to know what it was.Thanks.1980 GS1100E

    Thats a tow hook for when you need to pull a yamaha out of the ditch....

      its a pre made mounting point for a turbo
      1978 GS1085.

                Possibly a place to hold the engine at the factory.
                1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
                1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

                      It's a security device. You put a padlock through it so no one can steal your crankshaft.

                            In opinion they are points for indicator pins when the cases are machined. They are located on the centerline of the cases, which is most likely the reference datum.

                            It could be also used for hoisting, but why machine them if that were their only function?

                            The 700 engine has them too, but not practically located for hoisting.
