Starter clutch help

Does it look like this

Which does not show the two thrust washers I was expecting. But does have one closest to the block. The picture makes it appear that it has four grooves machined in it.

The fiche lookup on BikeBandit is a great tool (if your model bike has clear pictures, a lot of them are unreadable).

Exactly. I mentioned this in an earlier post, and some people thought the
Bike Bandit scematic was just wrong.

I use Bike Bandit all the time just to look at the scematics. I've never actually bought anything from them though. Hope they stay in business.

Me too. Hope they don't have anyone that works there frequenting this site .
Problem I have is their 1100E fiche are pretty much unreadable.

Anyway, sorry wasn't any help (just rehashed everything that was gone over before ). Maybe one of the 850 aficionados will jump in and solve this.

82 gs850gl left side noise

i have the same noise on my 82 gs850gl,(purchased last week,12k on it). based on info read on this site, i pulled the starter clutch off today. i also do not have any washers on either side of my starter idler gear. looking at the rollers,plungers,springs, and allen bolts, i cant see anything wrong. maybe the springs are weak, i dont know. i ordered all the parts just mentioned but now am wondering about the idle speed you mentioned. i believe the bike should be able to idle very low without starter clutch noise. my parts should be in by friday and i'll re-assemble asap. i wish we knew for sure if this is the problem. today the suzuki shop used a slide hammer to remove the rotor/starter clutch. i read somewhere that that method can stress the crankshaft, is this true? ps:my noise was mostly when in neutral and the clutch released.[/url][/list]

Finally a bike we can make a comparison to. My noise was also in neutral with the clutch released. Once in gear, even if just on the center stand and going under its own power, the noise was pretty much gone. I'll be interested to see what you find out by installing a new starter clutch. Please post once you're done.

im only replacing the rollers,springs, and plungers(about $30). i'll re-use the large clutch gear and clutch housing and hope for the best. new clutch assembly is about $160. hopefully by end of week i'll have results.i'm surprised with all the 82 850gl's out there there isin't more posting about this bike model & year.

follow up: i replaced the rollers,plungers(push pieces), and springs on my starter clutch today and still have the clanky, meshing type noise from my left side mainly in neutral(82 gs 850gl).happens at idle and thru rev's. really shows up when i lean bike to the right. two suzuki techs listened today and say it's in tranny. not good. bike had an easy life and only has 12k. sounds like a gear trying to mesh when bike is leaned to the right. tranny clip broke? sounds great otherwise. pipe rattle ruled out. any suggestions..

Hmm, it seems like the only difference between your problem and mine is that yours is making the noise trough all the revs. Mine was just at low idle, like 1000rpms or lower. When I had the cover off and bounced that idle gear around a bit by hand, it sure sounded just like the noise I was hearing. Also, if I put my hand over the cover right where the idle gear is, I could feel the vibration stronger there than anywhere else. I'm a little suspicious of someone saying it's a tranny problem, but again your problem may be different than mine. If your tech knows his stuff, and you trust him, then maybe he's right. Otherwise you might want to get a second opinion.

i do trust the techs, (known over 20 years). when i'm idling i hear it, then as i rev the engine the noise gets louder and scarier. leaning the bike to the right enhances the noise greatly. my ear puts the noise in the tranny or output area, closer to tranny though. when idling in neutral and pulling up or pushing down slightly on the shifter, i feel the noise in the shifter, and as i get closer to engaging a gear the resulting grinding sounds like my noise. sounds like i have a gear sliding on a shaft and grinding as it tries to mesh.

i got into the transmission and found 2 lockwashers and another ring of some kind missing from my tranny countershaft. 3 gears need replacing for dog wear
(as a result of missing lockwashers,etc.) im in the process of rebuilding.

noisy engine update

today i completed the tranny rebuild and rode for about 1hour. tranny is great, but i had to tamper with the factory preset metering screws on the carb. this may be because i disassembled the carbs to clean them, and also i had to bypass the pre-muffler as it broke during disassembly. i used exaust flex pipe. the bike wouldn't idle without choke or turning the idle screw way up. it ran rough also. all this was cured by turning the factory pre-set screws out 3 1/2 turns(all four of them). when i locate a vacume gauge i'll sync the carbs. now it idles and runs strong, especially on top. the instant i hit the start button, the bike starts. tomorrow will be a good ride.

Washer - no washer - it probably doesn't matter that much. The only time that gear is rotating is when the starter is engaged by pushing the starter button. So, in reality it doesn't have a lot of work to do. The washers are there to buffer the steel gear from the aluminum cases.

I doubt that this gear has anything to do with your noises.
