    85' gs 700 e not charging

I have a stock 85' gs 700 E. The battery doesn't keep a charge. I put a new one in and it still doesn't hold a charge. If I charge it then start the bike it runs fine. One time it stalled right after starting and the battery was to weak to start again.

My question is what do I need to fix this. I'm good with cars, but not so much with bikes.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Check all your connectors and connections and make sure everything is tight. I had a similar problem and all it ended up being was a loose wire on the r/r.

Time to go through the stator papers.

You may think those are some pretty short answers to your question but they are all you need. I think a pre req to become a GSR member would be to read the Stator Papers. Really !! If you want to own and have some quality time with your bike READ the papers. Otherwise you may have some bad encounters with a stranded GS.

Ok. Thanks for the info. I wondered if that's what it was. I figured I would ask on here for a quick answer rather than spending hours not knowing what I'm looking for on the bike.

The mythical "stator papers" gives a step by step fault finding chart for the charging system. That's the only way to appproach it. One component at a time, through the whole system.

Actually you need to do a little more than read them, you need to do the tests, too.

The rectifier is probably bad, its that part with the fins on it usually by the battery box. Check out your stator too, sometimes the stator will burn that part out.

                  Hope this helps

                    charge circuit

i have a 85 700-e and it was the stator on it, also killed the reg-rectifier. my wires were burnt up where they plug into rectifier. also if you need a rectifier i have an extra still in box wrap in plastic and never opened. five pole for a 700-e i'd take 50.00 bucks for it. cgrosshart@sbcglobal.net stator is really easy to change on your bike...
